TRV Expired but Work Permit Still Valid Can You Stay Work and Travel

An expired temporary resident visa does not automatically mean you have lost your immigration status inside Canada. IRCC distinguishes a visa used for travel from the authorization governing your stay. For workers, that authorization is connected to their work permit and applicable conditions.

The question therefore needs three answers: can you remain in Canada, can you continue your particular work, and what will you need if you leave? Treating those as one question can lead to unnecessary panic or an avoidable travel problem.

An expired temporary resident visa does not automatically mean you have lost your immigration status inside Canada.

Start with the document that actually expired

Open your passport and locate the visa counterfoil. Then locate the separate work permit. Write down the expiry date of each. Do not call both documents your work visa when asking for advice, because that makes it harder to identify the issue.

Situation to review Main document or fact Next practical step
TRV expired, permit still valid Work permit conditions Review stay and work separately
Permit also expiring Permit expiry and application history Assess extension options promptly
Trip outside Canada planned Entry-document requirements Resolve return documents before departure
Employer changing Employer restrictions Check authorization for the proposed job

For example, Aman notices that his visa expired last month but his employer-specific permit runs until next summer. He should not assume that the visa expiry authorizes a change of employer, nor assume that it independently ended the permit. The permit conditions remain central to the work question.

Can you keep working in Canada

If your work permit is valid, check its actual conditions: employer, occupation, location and any restrictions. A TRV is not a substitute for those conditions. An open permit and an employer-specific permit should not be treated as interchangeable simply because both holders have expired visa stickers.

If the permit itself is expiring, a separate maintained-status analysis may be necessary. IRCC says eligible workers who apply to extend or change their permits before expiry may continue under the original conditions while they remain in Canada. That is a different situation from having an expired TRV and a still-valid permit.

For background on the difference between maintained status and restoration, read our visitor-status guide; permission to continue working requires a separate assessment.

Build a simple employment record containing the permit, relevant application confirmations and current job details. If payroll asks why the visa date differs, explain the two documents accurately. Do not alter the visa scan, hide dates or describe a pending application as an approval.

Can you stay without renewing the TRV immediately

Remaining in Canada and returning after an international trip are different decisions. Assess your current authorized stay first. A person with a valid permit should not use the visa expiry date alone to determine whether restoration is required. Conversely, a still-valid visa does not repair an expired permit or unauthorized work.

Illustrative example: Sara's TRV expires in November, her permit in June, and she has no travel planned. Her immediate administrative task is to track the permit and maintain compliance, while separately planning any future visa application. Her friend's January holiday itinerary does not create the same urgency for Sara.

What changes when you want to travel

Check the requirements for your nationality, travel method and route. Work permits are not travel documents, and having a visa or eTA does not guarantee admission. IRCC's worker travel instructions explain that border examination remains necessary.

An expired TRV deserves attention before you book a trip to your home country. Do not assume that showing a valid work permit at airline check-in will replace the required visa. Also avoid extending a limited US-only return exception to a route that includes another country.

Prepare the complete itinerary, including overnight stops and side trips. A round trip labelled Toronto to New York may be straightforward to describe. A Toronto to New York booking followed by a separate international holiday is a materially different itinerary, even if the final flight to Toronto departs from New York.

Plan the application without confusing it with an extension

A new TRV application addresses the travel document. A work permit extension addresses permission to work and remain under the relevant conditions. Name the application correctly in your records so you do not mistake submitting one for submitting both.

If you hold an approved post-graduation work permit, follow the steps to apply for a TRV after PGWP approval before planning your next international trip.

Create two calendar reminders where needed: one for the work permit deadline and one for travel-document preparation. Assign each task its own evidence folder. This is particularly useful when a spouse has different dates or a child needs separate documentation.

A document audit before your next trip

Record the passport number, visa expiry, permit expiry, intended return date and current application numbers. Add a column for unanswered questions. If you cannot identify the document that supports return travel, resolve that question before relying on a reservation.

For a worker travelling for a family emergency, also prepare a communication plan with the employer. Clarify who will be contacted if return travel is delayed. Remote work from abroad may create separate employment, tax and immigration questions; it should not be assumed to be a universal workaround.

The useful answer to an expired TRV is therefore a document-specific plan. Check your status, check the job conditions, and then check your return requirements. Doing this in order avoids treating every expired visa as a status emergency while still taking international travel seriously.

If your visa, permit and travel dates do not align, ask K7 Immigration to review your TRV and work permit situation before you finalize your itinerary.
