The FIFA World Cup 2026™ is happening right now across Toronto and Vancouver — and if you're reading this without a Canadian PR card, an existing visitor visa, or any Canadian residency status, you still have a path to get there legally and on time.

Important: There is no special FIFA World Cup visa. You apply through Canada's standard immigration system — either a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV/visitor visa) or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) — depending on your passport country.

1. Do You Need a Visa, an eTA?

Canada uses a two-track entry system for foreign nationals. Your passport country determines which track you're on — there are no exceptions for sporting events, including the World Cup.

2. Who Qualifies for What — Visa-Required Countries

These nationalities must apply for a Temporary Resident Visa before travelling to Canada. This process cannot be skipped or expedited through FIFA or any ticket purchase.

 

UAE applicants: IRCC has reported severe processing backlogs at the Abu Dhabi visa office — some files reaching 320+ days. If you are a UAE resident applying now, speak with a licensed RCIC immediately to review your options.

Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, and Uganda: As of May 27, 2026, IRCC has suspended travel to Canada from these countries. Nationals residing in those countries are not currently eligible to travel to Canada.

3. Canada Visitor Visa (TRV): Step-by-Step Application

If your country requires a TRV, here is the complete application path — starting from zero Canadian immigration history.

Step 1: Create an IRCC Secure Account

Go to IRCC Secure Account and create an account. This is where your application lives and where IRCC will send decisions.

Step 2: Determine Your Biometrics Status

Most applicants aged 14–79 who have never given biometrics to Canada must give fingerprints and a photo at a Visa Application Centre (VAC). Biometrics, once collected, are valid for 10 years.

• Biometrics fee: CAD $85 per person (CAD $170 for a family applying together)
• After submitting your online application, IRCC sends a Biometric Instruction Letter (BIL) — you must book and attend your biometrics appointment quickly, as the processing clock only starts after biometrics are received
• Find your nearest VAC

Step 3: Complete IMM 5257 (Visitor Visa Application)

Complete the online application form through your IRCC account. You must answer all questions truthfully. Errors or omissions are among the top refusal triggers.

Step 4: Pay Government Fees

• Visitor visa fee: CAD $100 per person
• Family fee (5+ persons): CAD $500
• Payment is made online during the application process via credit/debit card

Step 6: Submit and Monitor Your Application

After submission, track your application status through your IRCC secure account. IRCC will request your passport for stamping once the visa is approved.

Step 7: Passport Submission for Visa Stamp

Once approved, you'll receive instructions to submit your passport to the visa office or a VAC for the visa sticker to be placed. This step typically adds 7–14 days.

4. eTA Application: Who Needs It and How to Apply

If you hold a visa-exempt passport and are flying to Canada, you need an eTA. It is not required if you are arriving by land or sea from the United States.

How to apply:

• Go to: Electronic travel authorization (eTA)
• You need: valid passport, email address, credit or debit card
• Fee: CAD $7
• Most eTAs are approved within minutes; some take a few days if additional review is required
• The eTA is electronically linked to your passport — no physical document is issued
• Valid for 5 years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first

5. Current Processing Times by Country (June 2026)

Processing times are published weekly by IRCC and vary significantly by country. Always verify on the official tool before applying.

Important context: IRCC's published times use an 80th-percentile methodology — meaning 20% of applications take longer than the published estimate. Do not treat published times as guaranteed.

The CAN+ Program — Faster Processing for Eligible Applicants

If you have previously travelled to Canada or the United States within the last 10 years, you may qualify for expedited processing through the CAN+ channel, reducing processing to approximately 10–15 days. This applies to applicants from certain eligible countries. Check eligibility through the IRCC tool above.

6. Exact Documents Required for a World Cup TRV Application

The following is the standard document package for a Canada visitor visa application. For a World Cup application, your travel purpose evidence (match tickets, itinerary) is particularly important.

Mandatory Documents

• Valid passport — must be valid for the duration of your stay; ideally 6 months beyond return date
• Completed IMM 5257 (Visitor Visa Application) — submitted through IRCC online account
• Recent passport-sized photographs — meeting IRCC photo specifications
• Proof of financial support — bank statements (last 3–6 months), pay stubs, employment letter with salary details, proof of assets
• Ties to home country — employment letter, business ownership documents, property ownership, family ties, enrollment in school
• Travel history — copies of previously issued visas (US, UK, Schengen), past travel stamps in passport
• Biometrics (if required — most applicants aged 14–79 not previously enrolled)

Purpose-of-Visit Documents (World Cup Specific)

• FIFA match ticket purchase confirmation — download from your FIFA account at https://www.fifa.com; not mandatory but strongly strengthens the application
• Hotel or accommodation bookings — must cover all nights of your stay; hotel confirmation numbers required
• Return flight bookings — confirmed or on-hold round-trip tickets with your full name, dates, and booking reference
• Travel itinerary — day-by-day plan covering the full duration of your Canadian stay, including match dates, venues, city travel plans, and departure
• Proof of funds for the trip — sufficient funds to cover flights, accommodation, match tickets, and daily expenses

Optional but Recommended

• Cover letter / Purpose of Visit letter — a 1–2 page letter explaining your purpose (attending specific FIFA matches), your ties to your home country, your financial capacity, and your clear intention to depart Canada before the authorized stay expires. This is one of the highest-impact additions to any visitor visa application.
• Invitation letter — if staying with a Canadian citizen or permanent resident (include their Canadian status documents)

7. FIFA World Cup 2026 Match Schedule in Canada

Canada is hosting 13 matches across two cities. All World Cup matches in Canada run from June 12 to July 2, 2026.

Toronto Stadium (BMO Field) — 6 Matches

Capacity: 45,736 | Location: Exhibition Place, Toronto, ON

BC Place (Vancouver) — 7 Matches

Capacity: 54,000 | Location: 777 Pacific Blvd, Vancouver, BC

Vancouver is the knockout-round hub in Canada. If Canada advances — and with 4 points from their first two games they are nearly through — all subsequent Canadian home matches will be at BC Place. If you are planning to attend knockout-stage games, Vancouver is the city to plan around.

8. What Happens at the Canadian Border (Port of Entry)

Having an approved TRV or eTA does not guarantee entry into Canada. A CBSA (Canada Border Services Agency) officer at the port of entry makes the final decision.

What the Officer Will Assess

• Are you admissible to Canada (no criminality, security concerns)?
• Is your purpose of visit genuinely temporary (tourist, match attendance)?
• Do you have sufficient funds to support yourself during your stay?
• Is there credible evidence you will leave Canada when authorized?

What You Should Carry at the Border

• Your passport with visa stamp (TRV holders) or eTA-linked passport (eTA holders)
• FIFA match tickets or ticket purchase confirmation
• Hotel booking confirmations for your full stay
• Return flight ticket
• Bank statements or proof of funds
• Travel itinerary

The Authorized Stay Period

The CBSA officer determines how long you are permitted to stay — this is not automatically your visa validity period. The standard authorized stay for visitors is up to 6 months, but officers can grant a shorter period. The date stamped in your passport or on your entry record (I-94 equivalent) is the legal deadline by which you must leave Canada.

Do not rely on your visa expiry date as your departure deadline — these are different. The date on your entry stamp or visitor record is what matters.

9. Common Visa Refusal Reasons — and How to Avoid Them

IRCC's global visitor visa approval rate sits at approximately 65–72% in 2026, but this varies significantly by country (South Korea: ~92%; Pakistan: ~50–60%; Nigeria: ~40–50%). Understanding refusal reasons is the single most effective way to improve your application.

If you've received a refusal before: A refusal does not permanently bar you from Canada. You can reapply immediately, but the same application resubmitted unchanged will likely produce the same result. Address the specific officer concerns before reapplying.
